The work, before the sales pitch

Painting is a trade you judge with your eyes. So the pictures come first here, ahead of the service list and ahead of anything we might say about ourselves.

Note for Tim, not page copy

Every frame above is empty on purpose, and it's the most important thing on this page. There are good photographs on your website right now. I didn't take a single one of them, and I'm not going to move somebody's pictures onto a page with your name on it without you telling me I can. They're yours or your web company's, and either way they aren't mine.

What I need from you is smaller than it looks. Eight shots, four pairs, and your crews are already standing in front of all of them. The only rule is that the before and the after get taken from the same spot. A phone is fine. That's the shot that sells an exterior repaint, and it's the one almost nobody in this trade actually has.

Why they're at the top instead of the bottom. Somebody deciding whether to hand you their house wants to see a house. On most contractor sites the work is buried under a list of sixteen services, and by the time you reach it you've already left. On this page the proof is the first thing and the second thing.

In our customers' words

Not paraphrased, not summarized. Exactly what they wrote.

“Tim and his team have a lot of integrity.”

Note for Tim, not page copy

Three of those four are blank and I want to be straight about why. Ronald E., John K. and Stephen C. are all published on your own homepage, so they're yours to use and I don't need anybody's permission. What I don't have in front of me is the exact wording. I'd rather hand you an empty box than retype a customer's sentence from memory and get a word wrong on a page that carries your name.

Send me the three as they're written and they go in exactly as written. No trimming, no tidying up the grammar.

The Roloff line is on there because I read it on your homepage. If he's fine with it staying, it stays. If he isn't, it comes off in a minute and nothing else on the page moves.

There is no Google review text anywhere on this page. Twelve hundred reviews and I quoted none of them, because I could read your rating and your count and nothing else. When I can read them properly, the best few come up here with the rating on top of them.

What we do

Residential, commercial and industrial, in your own order.

Note for Tim, not page copy

That list is yours, straight off your own navigation, in the order you have it. I didn't re-sort it into categories I liked better. If the order is wrong, the order is wrong on your site too, and that's worth knowing.

There isn't a price anywhere on this page. Nothing on your website prices anything either, which for a trade running four offices is the right call. I'm not going to be the one who puts a number on your work.

I also left your seasonal promotion off completely, and that was deliberate. It ends August 31. A page built around a promotion is a page that's wrong in four weeks. What a promotion needs is its own block that swaps out in two minutes without anybody touching the rest of the site, and that's how I'd build it.

Two things here I need you to check, and one thing I want to give you credit for.

  • The numbers. I've matched the (503) to Salem, the Corvallis number to Corvallis and the Eugene number to Eugene, because that's how they're grouped where I found them. Tell me if any of them actually rings a different desk and I'll move it.
  • The 26 communities. You publish the list. I have the count and not the names, and I'm not going to guess at towns. Send me the list and it goes under this section as its own block, which is also the part that does the most work in search.

The credit. Your hours on Google say open 24 hours, seven days, and your own contact page says the same thing word for word. That sounds like it should be normal and it almost never is. I checked it twice because I expected to find a mismatch. There isn't one, so this page prints it exactly as you have it.

The one I'd actually fix. Your Google listing has exactly one link on it, and it goes to your front page. Everything you sell runs through a free estimate, and right now a person who finds you on Google has to land on the homepage and go hunting for the button. That's not a website problem. That's a listing problem, and it's a ten minute fix that nobody has been handed.
